Fit on a budget: How to get ripped without getting ripped off

Free fitness. Fancy that.

Gym memberships. Smart watches. Protein powders. Matching workout sets you’ll wear exactly twice. The fitness industry loves to convince us that getting healthy means buying more.

Surprise! It doesn’t.

If you’re wondering how to stay fit on a budget, the answer is simple: Some of the most effective workouts are completely free.

I’ve always liked the idea that sustainable choices don’t have to be complicated (or expensive). Fitness is no exception.Choosing simpler workouts means buying less, creating less waste and spending more time outdoors. Better for your wallet, better for the planet, and just as good for your health.

In this article, I’ll show you three of my favourite budget-friendly workouts—jumping rope, calisthenics and walking—that prove staying active doesn’t have to cost the earth. Literally or financially.

1. Jumping rope: The wallet-friendly cardio king

Ah, jumping rope – the OG of free workouts. It’s simple, effective, and all you need is a rope (preferably one that doesn’t predate the Spice Girls).

Unless you want to splurge on a €100 jump rope, but even that’s optional. I did and truthfully it’s absolutely worth it and still much cheaper than a gym fee, right?

Why it’s brilliant:

  • You can do it anywhere: parks, pavements, beaches, or even around your garden if you’re avoiding public interaction.
  • It’s a full-body workout, torching calories and boosting your cardiovascular health. Plus, if you’ve got a playlist with an epic beat drop, you might just feel like the star of your own montage.

Benefits for your physique:

  • Cardio powerhouse: If you’re looking to improve cardiovascular health, jump rope is the way to go. It gets your heart rate up and keeps it there, making it an excellent alternative to running. Better yet, research shows that 10 minutes of jump rope equals thirty minutes of running. Plus, it’s great for those who don’t want to endure endless hours of treadmill torture.
  • Full-body workout: Think jumping rope is just for your legs? Think again! This full-body workout engages your core, shoulders, and arms, giving you a complete workout with each hop. You’ll feel the burn in places you didn’t even know existed.
  • Torching calories: One of the best things about jumping rope is its ability to burn calories at an impressive rate. Depending on your intensity, you can burn up to 10-15 calories per minute. That’s more than double the rate of running at a moderate pace!
  • Improved coordination: Jumping rope requires some rhythm, and as you practice, your coordination and balance improve. This is a nice bonus, especially for anyone who’s ever tripped over their own feet (which, let’s face it, we’ve all done).

How to do it:

You don’t need to be a double-under pro to start. Grab your rope, find a flat surface (no need for a fancy gym floor), and start with basic jumps. Begin with 30 seconds of jumping, followed by 30 seconds of rest, and gradually increase your jumping time as you build stamina. Eventually, you can try more advanced moves like the criss-cross or double-under to keep things exciting.

My personal experience:

I started jumping rope during the corona pandemic, because well, what else could you do if you couldn’t leave the house? And I was staggered. You know what surprised me most? How much energy you would get through the entire day just by starting the day with a ten-minute jump rope workout.

I felt like a cannonball shooting through the day – and I can tell that I’m not the only one who experienced this. So ditch the coffee and get out that dusty rope from the attic.

Pro Tip: To avoid the inevitable “I have rope burn on my legs” situation, wear long pants or sleeves when you’re first starting out. Safety first!

2. Calisthenics: The ultimate exercise without a gym membership

No equipment, no gym, no excuses. Calisthenics is the ultimate strength workout that you can do anywhere, anytime. It’s all about using your body weight to build muscle, improve strength, and increase flexibility. Plus, it’s free and you don’t have to look at a single dumbbell or machine.

It’s also a pretty clever sustainable workout. After all, your body has been with you this whole time — and unlike most gym equipment, it doesn’t need assembling, charging or a corner of your bedroom to live in.

Why it’s brilliant:

  • They’re customizable for all fitness levels. Whether you’re a noob or a pro, there’s a calisthenics routine for you.
  • You can do them in your living room, your garden, or even in the queue at Tesco if you’re brave enough.

Benefits for your physique:

  • Builds lean muscle: Calisthenics exercises like push-ups, squats, and pull-ups work your muscles to fatigue, which leads to muscle growth. No need for a fancy set of weights or gym equipment here. With just your own body, you can work on increasing muscle tone and building strength.
  • Functional strength: Since calisthenics mimics natural body movements, it improves functional strength. This means you’ll be more equipped to do daily activities—like carrying groceries or wrestling with your couch when it’s time to rearrange your living room.
  • Flexibility and mobility: Many calisthenics exercises, such as lunges and dips, require a great range of motion, which can help improve flexibility and mobility in your joints. Flexibility is important for overall health, so adding calisthenics to your routine helps you stay limber, not stiff.
  • Adaptable for all levels: Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned fitness pro, calisthenics can be adapted to suit your needs. Starting with wall push-ups or knee push-ups? Perfect! Want to move up to one-arm push-ups or pistol squats? You got this! The progression is all about consistency and challenging yourself.

How to do it:

Start simple. Some of the most effective bodyweight exercises include:

  • Push-ups (works the chest, arms, and core)
  • Squats (works the legs, glutes, and core)
  • Lunges (targets the legs and glutes)
  • Planks (engages the core)
  • Dips (works the arms, chest, and shoulders)

You can do these exercises in a circuit format for a quick and effective workout. Start with 3 sets of 10-15 reps per exercise, and increase the number of sets or reps as you get stronger.

My personal experience:

At the moment this is my preferred workout. Due to a chronic illness, my days vary like the tide of the ocean. And calisthenics is one of the most adaptable workouts there is. There are progressions and regressions, so you can always fit your workout to your current physical health status. Plus, it’s basically a static form of gymnastics. How cool is that!

Pro Tip: There are many calisthenics parks out there. This means you can combine your free workouts with some healthy fresh air and meet new people who can probably teach you a few new skills.

3. Walking: The surprisingly powerful exercise

Yes, walking. The activity we all know and love, and probably the most underrated workout out there. But don’t let its simplicity fool you – walking has incredible benefits that can transform your body when done regularly. And beside that it’s one of the cheapest ways to stay fit, which is probably why we underestimate it so much.

Why it’s brilliant:

  • It’s a workout and a mini holiday rolled into one.
  • Fresh air is good for your mental health, especially if you take a walk out in nature.

Benefits for your physique:

  • Low-impact cardiovascular exercise: Walking is easy on the joints but still provides great cardiovascular benefits. It helps improve circulation, boost endurance, and keeps your heart healthy without putting too much strain on your body. If you’re someone who gets sore easily, walking is a great choice.
  • Weight loss and fat burning: Believe it or not, walking can help you burn fat. If you walk briskly for at least 30 minutes, you’ll be torching calories and improving your metabolism. Plus, it’s a great way to clear your mind.
  • Improved mood: Walking has been shown to release endorphins, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. It’s the perfect time to clear your head, listen to a podcast, or just enjoy nature. If you’re in need of a mood booster, a daily walk is a wonderful habit to form.
  • Toned legs and glutes: Walking may not seem like it’s doing much for your muscles, but over time, it can help tone your legs and glutes. And it’s also proven to be a great exercise if you’re suffering from back pain. Plus, if you add a little incline or try power walking, you’ll increase the intensity and get even more benefits.

How to do it:

The key to walking for fitness is consistency and effort. While a leisurely stroll with a coffee is great for your mind, brisk walking is where the magic happens. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day, and if you want to make it more challenging, find some hills or stairs to incorporate into your walk. Want to know on why going outside is so good for you? Pro Tip: Want to add some extra flair to your walk? Take a pair of ankle or wrist weights for a challenge, or walk with a purpose (like trying to make it to the coffee shop before they run out of your favorite drink).

Fitness that’s kind to your wallet and your body

So, there you have it: three workouts that will cost you absolutely nothing. Jumping rope, calisthenics, and walking are all fantastic ways to get stronger, leaner, and more energized.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, staying fit on a budget is easy and can be done anywhere — at home, in the park, or even on your lunch break. The best part is, you don’t need any fancy gear or an expensive gym to get fit. All you need is your body, a little motivation, and consistency.

And perhaps this is what I like most about these workouts: they are genuinely sustainable workouts because they don’t depend on buying more stuff every time you want to get moving. Your wallet gets a break, your storage space stays intact, and that forgotten piece of equipment in the corner can finally stop judging you.

So, slip into your scruffiest trainers and get ready to sweat without spending a cent.
